What is Black August?

* Resource subject to update

Black August originated in California prisons in 1979. The month honors black resistance in those prisons and commemorates the lives and deaths of several fallen Freedom Fighters including Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, W.L. Nolan, James McClain, William Christmas and Khatari Gaulden, among many others.

Black August is intended to create revolutionary consciousness & commemorates the collective principles of inner fortitude, unity, and discipline needed to achieve self-determination and freedom.

We have compiled a course list of readings, videos, and primary sources to help make Black August 2020 a month of reflection and learning.
